Despite being Turkish, Fatma, born in 1960, couldn’t have the opportunity to learn to read and write in her native language. This lifelong challenge persisted until a chance encounter changed her path.
Thanks to the generous support of the U.S. Government, RET International has been implementing the “Integrated Approach to Increase Resilience in Underserved Communities” program in the regions of Samsun, Çorum, Aksaray, and Kayseri. One of the key objectives of this project is to enhance social cohesion by offering Turkish language courses designed primarily for refugees, aiding their integration into the labor market and social life.
Fatma’s life took a turn when she was introduced to RET International’s “My Life Community Center” in Aksaray through one of her Syrian neighbors. Recognizing the importance of literacy in her life, she eagerly enrolled in the Turkish Language course offered by the center. With determination and excitement, Fatma aimed to learn the basics of reading and writing, even at a beginner level.
In just the first month of her training, Fatma’s hard work paid off. She learned to read and write, an achievement she described as a dream come true. “I cannot express how happy I am,” Fatma exclaimed. “Being able to read and write, even at this basic level, is a dream come true for me.”
But Fatma’s journey isn’t solely about learning a language; it’s about finding a sense of belonging and connection. At RET’s center, she is surrounded by friends from diverse nationalities, including Syrian, Afghani, and Iranian. These friendships have enriched her experience, as they spend breaks conversing, exchanging stories, and learning about each other’s cultures. “This place is more than just a classroom,” Fatma shared. “It’s a center where friendships start and barriers dissolve.”
Supported by her family and inspired by her classmates, her journey is a powerful symbol of the impact that education and community support can have on an individual’s life. Her story underscores the importance of the program which aims to build stronger, more cohesive communities through education and integration efforts. Fatma’s story is a great example of what can be achieved when opportunities for learning and connection are made accessible to all.
